A Recap of Last Week

My mom arrived last Tuesday. Colleen left for camp for two days and we spent the next two days and nights waiting for Kai to make his appearance. We did have some yummy meals including a meal with Chris and Lisa at Volterra the night before I went into labor.

Friday night I slept poorly. I was super uncomfortable all night and feeling a lot of pressure. Then when I had some bleeding at around 6:00AM I knew it was time. We rushed around in excitement and made it to the hospital around 7:00. I was only 4cm dilated. They had me do some walking which was pretty uncomfortable but managable. At noon they checked me again and I was 6cm and my blood pressure had spiked a bit. They suggested I take the epidural to try to reduce my blood pressure. So I did. I was ready for it at that point. I'm all for the pain medicine! About 5 minutes after my epidural started working, at 12:20, my water broke. That's when time started to go very quickly. By around 2:00 I was fully dilated and the dr said, "this baby is coming really fast". Everyone rushed around getting the room ready. Thom and I kept talking about how surreal the whole situation was. It was so different from Lauren's birth. Once everything was set up I started pushing and 25 minutes later Kai was born. It was a scary start. When his head was out it was purple and they called for the Pediatrics department. A few minutes later we were relieved to find out it was only the pressure and bruising from his rapid bith that had caused the discoloring. He still has little broken blood vessels on his head, arm and in both eyes. It sure was a scary moment. He's doing great now. He lost some weight. He went down to 8lb 4oz by Tuesday of this week so they told us to supplement with a little formula. This has been kind of nice because the girls and Thom have also gotten to feed him. Yesterday at his weight check he was 8lbs 7oz so he's on his way back up. He's a really good baby. He has a few mini crying episodes but for the most part he just eats, sleeps and fills his diaper. We haven't had a spraying accident yet with the diaper change. Yesterday at his weight check I left it uncovered and pointed at the nurse. She almost ducked for cover. I guess I have a lot more to learn about raising a little boy.
